Barbados arrival information

Some handy hints and tips about flights, arrivals and general things about the island.

For those transiting through London Gatwick Airport there is a change to the Virgin Atlantic departures it is now from North terminal, this came into effect as of the start of 2017. If you are staying in a hotel at the airport Virgin have a very handy “twilight check in” which allows you to drop off your big bags the evening before your flight. This means that in the morning you can avoid the check in queues and go straight to security.

For those who have not been to Barbados (BGI) before try and take a seat on the port side of the plane. As you arrive over BGI the plane takes a long left turn as it descends into Grantley Adams airport and as the plane banks you get a great view of the island and the racing area in Carlisle Bay

On the flight over you will be given an immigration form, on it you are asked amongst the usual things, where you are staying. It is vital not to forget this on your form as you will not be allowed through immigration without declaring where you are staying.

Many hotels have a courtesy shuttle bus that will be waiting to take you to the hotel. These should be booked in advance. To find the bus, as you come out of the airport building turn left and walk to the end of the covered area to where the busses are parked.

Those at self catering apartments there are plenty of taxis at the arrivals area.

It takes about 20 minutes to get to the Club.

Tap water is safe to drink.

Shopping there is a well stocked supermarket at Worthing, close to the Club, they do a free shuttle bus back to your accommodation.

Electricity in Barbados is 110/115v with USA type wall plugs. It is a good idea to bring your own multi-plug extension lead so you can plug in phones, laptops etc at the same time with just a single converter plug.

Money, the Barbados Dollar (BBD) is pegged to the US Dollar (USD) on a ratio of 2:1. It is easier to bring USD with you and use it in shops, restaurants etc. You can pay in USD and you will get change in BBD. You get a much better rate if you go to the bank rather than the hotel reception. The nearest bank is at the supermarket at Worthing, take your passport (ID is required) and get cash over the counter rather than risk putting my card into the ATM.

All containers will be locked so please remember your container key. When your nominated person comes to the office / registration area that person can simply swop locks, then you will be able to unload your container.

The BYC is a cashless club, when you arrive you need to visit the Club office to obtain a temporary card. You will be asked for your credit card number. Every few days the club will debit your card for the food and beverage bought over the bar / restaurant.

At registration all sailors and non sailors who have paid their entry fees will be given wrist bands, these will give you access to the social side of the on shore parties ceremonies.

If you have any questions please get in contact. Looking forward to meeting you all in Barbados.
